Manchester City will need Andre Marriner to be a strong referee when they head to Newport for Saturday night’s FA Cup fifth round tie.

Pep Guardiola 's Blues will face the League Two minnows on a dreadful mudheap of a pitch, seven days after Mansfield boss David Flitcroft said that his team’s trip to south Wales had been “one of the worst football experiences that I have had”.

Flitcroft, brother of former City player Garry, claimed that the referee failed to protect his players against dangerous challenges by Newport players who were playing for their places in the team against the Blues.

It was probably one of the worst football experiences that I have had, watching a game,” he said.

“Watching the referee mopping the blood up, it throws you.

“But Newport take you out of your rhythm and the referee helped them with that.

And after his striker Danny Rose ended up in hospital with two jaw fractures, a lost tooth and a severed artery which saw blood gushing into the mud of the Rodney Parade pitch, Flitcroft was very unhappy.
