Only once have Manchester City been given the honour of opening the defence of their five Premier League titles in front of their home fans.

Since returning to the Premier League from their wanderings in the wilderness in 2002, City have been scheduled away in 12 of their 18 opening day fixtures, the latest being their lunchtime trip to West Ham on August 10.

But the Premier League has always maintained this was simply a statistical freak, and the facts bear that out.

And, while the fixtures compilers use computers, programmed to a set format, it seems that the software has not been too kind to City fans down the years.

The opening day, last day and Boxing Day are probably the three dates which most fans turn to first when the fixtures are published , apart from obvious games like derbies and clashes with expected title rivals.

They have also been away in 13 of their 18 Boxing Day fixtures, a date which English football fans traditionally cherish, and on which most match-going fans would prefer a home game.

Boxing Day is also accorded no special significance, with City’s tendency to get an away game balanced out by the fact that clubs who play away on Boxing Day always get a home game on New Year’s Day.
