Manchester City midfielder Douglas Luiz is highly rated by Pep Guardiola and the Blues boss made it clear last summer just how frustrated he was that the player wouldn't be a part of his squad for the 2018-19 campaign.

Guardiola was keen to keep hold of Luiz but the Brazilian wasn't granted a work permit and as a result was sent back on loan to Girona for a second season.

The deal will include a buy-back clause in case City want to reunite with Luiz further down the line and, judging by how Guardiola spoke about him 12 months ago, it wouldn't be a surprise to see that happen.

"He’s not allowed [to play for us],” Guardiola said last August after Luiz was denied a work permit.

Luiz impressed last term despite Girona's relegation to the Spanish second tier and he looks set to join Aston Villa after the Midlands club agreed a £15million deal with City for his transfer.

I am so sad and disappointed for Douglas because he could help us, play with us.

He has shown many good things in training sessions and the reason why we spent a lot of money to buy him is because he is a player with a huge capacity to play for us.”
