Manchester United fans could be forgiven for taking a romantic trip down memory lane on Wednesday with the likes of Robin van Persie, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick appearing in Vincent Kompany's testimonial at the Etihad. The Belgian was unable to play due to a hamstring injury but an exciting all-star XI held its own against Kompany's City select, drawing 2-2 during an entertaining game in the north-west.

Eagle-eyed supporters spotted that the former Arsenal man still holds a special place for United in his heart as his shinpads were emblazoned with the Red Devils' crest.

Van Persie spent eight years at Arsenal but he tasted Premier League success during a three-year stint at Old Trafford following a £22m move to the north-west.

The Dutchman spearheaded United to the title during his debut season at the club and ensured Sir Alex Ferguson retired as a Premier League winner.

Van Persie bagged 58 goals in 105 appearances for the Red Devils.
