Former Man City manager Stuart Pearce believes the club needs to strengthen in the middle of defence, holding midfield and up-front this summer.

As a result Pearce has urged Pep Guardiola to strengthen his squad in order to retain the Premier League for a second time and finally claim European glory.

It's understood that a centre-back is being hunted to replace recently departed captain Kompany, with Leicester's Harry Maguire the top target.

“And I always think upfront, you can always strengthen with a striker.” It certainly seems that City are heeding Pearce's advice so far as they plan their summer activity.

City achieved unprecedented success last season after they became the first mens team in English football history to a win a domestic treble after claiming the Carabao Cup, Premier League and FA Cup.

“I think all teams need to strengthen no matter who they are,” Pearce, who managed City between 2005-07 and played for the club for a season, told Sky Sports News.

“Just to get a fresh face in the dressing room, Man City with Kompany leaving that leaves an issue at the centre of defence, I think as well the holding midfield role as well as if they lose Fernandinho for any period of time, which they did last season, would cause them problems.
