Pep Guardiola has denied that Jurgen Klopp is the only coach who has forced him to adapt his style of football.

But the City boss said conceding possession has not been a case of being forced to change his style.

Only three times in Guardiola’s coaching career has one of his teams had less possession than the opposition – and each time it was against a team managed by Klopp.

Manchester City and Liverpool go head to head on Sunday, with the Blues needing a win to cut the Merseysiders’ six-point lead, while a draw would leave them within striking distance.

“But when that’s not happened it’s because Dortmund was a good team and Liverpool was a good team and the way they play they have the quality to do that.

Guardiola’s whole ethos is based on having the ball more than the opposition, but his Bayern Munich team had to concede greater possession to Borussia Dortmund in 2015, while City saw less of the ball against Liverpool in last season’s Anfield league clash and this season’s Community Shield.

“I haven’t play many times against them - eight or nine times and lost three so it’s not much.
