Pep Guardiola refused to accept his Manchester City team will be underdogs when they head to Anfield to play Liverpool on Sunday.

Nicolas Anelka’s two goals in 2003 mark the only City win on the red half of Merseyside in recent history, and it remains the one Premier League ground on which they have now won since the 2008 takeover revolutionised the club.

And with a fistful of injuries to key players, including goalkeeper Ederson, City take a depleted team to play a side which is unbeaten in the league since January – when City beat them 2-1 at the Etihad.

Asked how it felt to be underdogs, Guardiola replied: “What does it mean to be an outsider?

But the Blues manager said his team will have to put in their best performance of the season to end a hoodoo which has brought them just one win there in 38 years.

“But I’m not going to take the bus to Anfield on Sunday thinking I’m going to lose the game.

I’ve never gone into a game feeling like an outsider and feeling like I’m not going to win.
