Napoli have knocked €10m off Kalidou Koulibaly's asking price, their president Aurelio Di Laurentiis has said.

Koulibaly is on Manchester City's summer transfer shortlist, with the club looking to improve their back line following their failed Premier League title defence.

City have already had a bid accepted for Nathan Ake, but that deal should not affect any subsequent approach for Koulibaly.

Di Laurentiis has now offered an update, saying he does not want to lose Koulibaly, but accepts it could happen. He quoted €90m (£80m) as the price it would take for Napoli to sell the Senegal international.

£80m may still be too high for City, who will not pay over the odds for players they feel are being overvalued, but they might be encouraged that that price is ten million lower than Di Laurentiis' last public update on his prize defender.

In June, he said: "If City or United or PSG with €100m (£90m) showed up, I would think about it [selling Koulibaly] and it is probable that they [the player] would leave, always if their will was to leave.”

Now, Di Laurentiis has told Sky Italia: “Kalidou is a wonderful person and of course it’d be sad to lose him.

“Everything has a time and a place, even when it comes to going our separate ways. Having said that, we don’t have €90m on the table and in any case, it takes two to separate.”

Kalidou Koulibaly to City latest

Last week, Koulibaly himself spoke about his future, saying he was only focussed on their final Serie A games and Champions League last-16 tie. Napoli only won two of their final six games to finish seventh, outside the Europa League places in the table, but securing qualification to that tournament after winning the Coppa Italia.

In the Champions League, Napoli are level with Barcelona after a 1-1 home draw in the first leg of the last-16 tie in February. If they were to beat Barcelona, and then Chelsea or Bayern Munich in the quarter-final, they could potentially meet City in the semi-final.
