Maurizio Sarri confirmed Alvaro Morata was simply dropped for Saturday’s evening clash with Manchester City rather than the striker suffering with an injury.

The Chelsea manager described the move as ‘tactical’ as he left both of his conventional strikers Olivier Giroud and Morata out of the starting line-up to play Eden Hazard through the middle instead.

While Giroud at least made the bench, Morata was completely left out of the squad and won’t be involved at Stamford Bridge.

Pep Guardiola also set up his Manchester City side without a typical front man, with Raheem Sterling starting through the middle, and Sarri predicted a high-tempo game.

‘I don’t know because in Manchester City maybe because they have out [Sergio] Aguero,’ Sarri told BT Sport.

‘Today maybe for the first time in Prmier league there is the opportunity to have more spaces. I prefer to play faster football.

When asked why Morata didn’t make the squad, he added: ‘It’s tactical because with the side to start with eden in another position so I think it’s useless to have two strikers on the bench.’

Guardiola explained his own tactical moves, saying: ‘Well we know the movement, defensive movements from Chelsea.

‘We want to find some spaces with Raheem, that’s the reason why.’
