Only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi can be rated as better players than Raheem Sterling, believes Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

The 24-year-old has been in superb form for club and country so far this season, scoring eight goals in his last seven games for Manchester City and England.

The former Liverpool forward was integral to England’s two big wins over the international break, scoring in the victories over Bulgaria and Kosovo, while also providing assists for Harry Kane and Jadon Sancho.

Carragher now believes that Sterling is England’s best player, but has gone further, to rate him above Paris Saint-Germain’s Brazilian superstar, Neymar.

‘He [Sterling] is now in the top five or six best attacking players in the world, in that group just below Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo,’ Carragher wrote in the Telegraph.

‘I wrote recently he and Sadio Mane are the best left-sided players out there. I now rate Sterling above Neymar.

‘His ambition, alongside Kylian Mbappe, should be to fill the post-Messi and Ronaldo void once they retire.

‘He is a potential Ballon d’Or winner over the next four or five years, the current upward trajectory destined to make Sterling a global superstar.’

Sterling has started all four of Manchester City’s Premier League games so far this campaign, netting five goals in the process, and he will be hoping to be in the starting XI again when they travel to Norwich on Saturday evening.

The England star’s finishing has improved so notably that Man City boss Pep Guardiola believes he can play as a central striker, as well as his more familiar position on the wing.

‘Since we started this season in China and the Community Shield he has scored one goal minimum every game,’ Guardiola told the official Man City website in August.
