Manchester City are ‘very pleased’ with the £55m deal they have agreed with Bayern Munich for the sale of Leroy Sane, sources have told Metro.co.uk.

The two clubs agreed an initial £44m fee for the Germany winger today, with Bayern set to pay an extra £11m in ‘achievable’ add-ons based on their success in the Bundesliga and Champions League.

The 24-year-old will travel to Munich tonight to complete his medical and he’s set to become the club’s top earner on a weekly salary of around £275,000-a-week, as well as a £10m signing-on fee.

Sane had angled for a move to the Allianz Arena in 2019, with Metro.co.uk reporting that City had feared Bayern Munich had turned the German’s head during contract negotiations with the winger.

CIty nevertheless persisted with contract talks and placed a probitive £130m price tag on the winger in a bid to thwart off Bayern’s interest.

However, Sane tore his ACL in CIty’s Community Shield win against Liverpool in August 2019, which put an end to Bayern’s hopes of signing him last summer.

City felt the injury gave them renewed hope of keeping Sane and the German was in two minds about joining Bayern immediately after his return, particularly as City had kept their contract offer on the table to him throughout his time on the sidelines.

However, Sane made it clear in May that he remained intent on joining Bayern and City set about extracting the biggeest fee possible for the midfielder.

Despite losing a player of Sane’s calibre, City are pleased with the £55m deal they have struck. The club felt they were in a vulnerable position given Sane was running out of contract and returning from a long-term injury but they believe they have extracted a fair fee from the German giants.

There was also a willingness from City’s side to complete the deal before the transfer window opened because there’s yet to be a ‘market correction’ in terms of player fees due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Bayern also agreed to a 10% sell-on fee in the deal for Sane, who joined City from Schalke for £37m in 2016.

The German giants had offered a significantly lower upfront fee but agreed to City’s demand of £45m as talks progressed.

Pep Guardiola is likely to use the cash to fund a move for a centre-back, though a new winger remains another priority.
