Manchester City have been backed to claw back Liverpool's lead over them at the top of the Premier League.

Mark Lawrenson reckons City's impending 3-0 win over Wolves on Monday night will see them continue their assault on a consecutive Premier League title.

"That game, which City won 2-1, was so finely balanced and if that Mane shot had gone in, I think Liverpool would have won it.

"You only have to look at City's results in the two games they have played since then to see how much that result has lifted them, and I just see them kicking on now.

"If they do stay in the top half that would be a really good first season back for them, and you could envisage them really building on that in the summer."

"City scored seven against Rotherham, nine against Burton - so I guess they will be going for 11 against Wolves," he said.

And they'll be coming up against Wolves having scored 16 goals over their past two matches, with Lawrenson crediting the 2-1 defeat of Liverpool earlier this month as the catalyst for their recent run of good form.
