Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho is among the leading contenders for the Player of the Year award at the end of the season, according to a pair of Sky Sports pundits.

“Sergio Aguero is a big part of how good Man City are, so consistent over a long period of time, so he would have to be in there,” Le Tissier said.

“Fernandinho and [Liverpool defender] Virgil Van Dijk have been the two standout players in the league this season, which is weird - one is a defensive midfielder, the other a defender, in such an exciting league.

City are likely to be represented on the nominees list this season and Paul Merson believes Fernandinho must be in the running, a view that Phil Thompson agrees with.

Raheem Sterling is another name that has been touted, this time by Charlie Nicholas, though he doesn't sound completely convinced: "I am looking at City players who are being prominent, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard (for Chelsea) have both been very prominent, but not as consistent as you would like."

The Brazilian has been integral to City’s push to retain their Premier League crown and the 33-year-old has been a mainstay in Pep Guardiola’s side, attracting plenty of plaudits for his performances.

We have seen that for all superstars that City have got, if he does not play, they are not superstars.
