Kevin De Bruyne insists that he has no sympathy for Liverpool finishing second in the Premier League this season by claiming that Manchester City were just ‘better than them’.

The title race went down to the final day of the season after both clubs had gone head-to-head throughout the campaign but City just pipped their rivals to first place by a single point.

Liverpool’s haul of 97 points would have been enough to win the Premier League in 25 of the 27 seasons in the competition’s history with only City’s 100 points last term and 98 this superior.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were also beaten just once – crucially against City – while Pep Guardiola’s men were defeated four times throughout the season.

Speaking about Liverpool’s challenge, De Bruyne said: ‘It’s a remarkable effort, but it means that we were just better than them in the end.

‘I don’t feel sorry for them, because I don’t think they’d feel sorry for us. I don’t think anybody felt sorry about the way we went out of the Champions League. You take it.’

After City’s 4-1 victory over Brighton secured their fourth Premier League title, Klopp insisted that Liverpool would challenge them for their crown again next season.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Wolves, Klopp said: ‘Congratulations to Manchester City. We tried everything to make it as difficult as possible but not difficult enough. I couldn’t be more proud of the boys.’

Liverpool still have plenty to play for this season, though, as they face Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid on June 1.

City, meanwhile, could become the first team in English football history to win a domestic treble should they defeat Watford in the FA Cup final.
