Two years ago, in July 2017, Pep Guardiola met with Dani Alves to sell him his vision for Manchester City.

There's always been a fascination with seeing Alves come to the Premier League, but this is no longer vintage Alves.

The former Barcelona right-back, then 34, was leaving Juventus after just one year in Turin and officials at the Etihad felt a reunion between Alves and his former Barca boss Guardiola was a done deal.

But while City officials awaited the arrival of Alves, he was still negotiating with Paris Saint-Germain, eventually signing a two-year deal with the French giants instead.

Alves would have been a great addition to City and to the Premier League, a truly thrilling player to watch, but the Blues didn't do too badly without him.

Alves was still a big name two years ago, arguably no player has done more to transform his position on the pitch than the Brazilian, who redefined the role of a right-back in Guardiola's great team in Catalunya.

But having been left disappointed by Alves' shock decision to sign for PSG two years ago, City might be wise to turn their attentions elsewhere this summer.
