Man City have quietly pieced together a future 'team' in just three months

Manchester City have spent the lockdown quietly piecing together a potential team for the future.

The Blues have either signed, or lined up, nine teenage signings while the pandemic has disrupted the football season.

The Blues have moved to snap up two 16-year-olds - left back Juan Larios from the Barcelona youth system, and defensive midfielder Romeo Lavia from Anderlecht – in the past 24 hours.

There are no guarantees that either of them, or any of the other seven signings made recently, are targeted for the first team at City, although those two certainly seem to be, as is former Juventus striker Pablo Moreno.

The way City Football Group (CFG) operates, as it services nine different clubs around the world, means that some of the captures may never even see Manchester, let alone play for the Blues.

But every one of them has the opportunity to catch the eye of the academy staff.

City have also developed a lucrative sideline in buying young talent and selling it on without the player ever establishing a firm foothold in the first team squad – such as £25million for Kelechi Iheanacho, £10million for Aaron Mooy, £9million for Rony Lopes.

So the nine signings they have made could end up at a sister club – Bulgarian attacking midfielder Filip Krastev has already signed for Belgian outfit Lommel and been loaned back to Slavia Sofia. But Krastev will be watched carefully by City, who will obviously have first option if he develops his raw talent to the full.

Here is the 'team' that City have pieced together:

GOALKEEPER – Mikki van Sas (above). The 16-year-old has joined City from Dutch club Utrecht, whose technical director described him as a “complete and modern goalkeeper in the making”.

RIGHT BACKS -Yan Couto. The 18-year-old Brazil youth international will join City tomorrow from Coritiba, where he made two senior appearances, and was also being chased by Barcelona.

Kluiverth Aguilar. A Peru under-23 international at the age of 17, Aguilar will join City next May, when he turns 18. Already a member of the senior Allianza Lima squad.

LEFT BACK – Juan Larios. The 15-year-old will join from Barcelona’s academy next month, when he turns 16, reportedly for a £400,000 fee.

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD – Romeo Lavia. United and Liverpool were also interested in the Anderlecht 16-year-old, who is tall and gifted, and ca also play as a centre back. The comparisons with Vincent Kompany are inevitable.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD – Filip Krastev. Looks like a CFG signing, as he has hooked up with Belgian side Lommel and instantly loaned back to Slavia Sofia. But the 18-year-old will be monitored by City.

ATTACKING MIDFIELD – Josh Adam. The Celtic attacking midfielder excited scouts across Europe when he dazzled in a Dutch tournament – and City won the race for the 16-year-old.

WINGER – Liam Smith. The 17-year-old Kilmarnock youngster models his game on Riyad Mahrez and was due to join in January for £200,000, but the deal went through in March.

STRIKER – Pablo Moreno. Another Barcelona product snapped up, this time from Juventus, with a fee of around £9million agreed for the 18-year-old, including Felix Correia going the other way.
