Why teams from lower divisions can have more success than Premier League sides against this City unit is another discussion - Wolves also troubled City in the league cup in 2017 - but Pep Guardiola admitted that having a promoted team third on the fixture list wasn't great.

Having reigned supreme over the Premier League to clinch the title by 19 points in 2018, it was a newcomer that brought Manchester City crashing back down to earth last season.

Good news then for Guardiola from the 2019/20 fixture list as he doesn't have to face a newly-promoted team until their fifth fixture when they travel to Norwich.

City fared better against Fulham (their fifth game) and Cardiff (their sixth) but the fact they found Wolves much easier in the return leg gave credence to Guardiola's point.

Liverpool face Championship winners Norwich in their opening game and travel to Sheffield United in their seventh, Chelsea have the same two teams in their first five fixtures and Tottenham host Villa on the first day.

"From my experience as a manager the first games are always tough against newly promoted teams," he said after watching Wolves earn a 1-1 draw last season.

"I don't like to play the newly promoted teams first, I prefer to play them in November or December because [now] they have enthusiasm and they don't feel the pressure to play one of the contenders to win the Premier League."
