Here are the Manchester City evening headlines for Sunday, August 2

Rooney: De Bruyne one of top three in the world

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes that Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne is one of the three best players on the planet.

Rooney lined up against De Bruyne in two Machester derbies, losing one and drawing one, but lost 3-1 against City after he had joined Everton.

He wrote in his Sunday Times column : “There’s no doubt Man City’s biggest weapon is De Bruyne – arguably one of the top three players in the world right now

“Playing against him was never, ever, easy and I’ll always remember Everton using me and Morgan Schneiderlin, in a 4-4-2, against a City midfield of De Bruyne, David Silva and Fernandinho, with Sterling dropping in.

“They absolutely outnumbered us. Me and Schneiderlin were in the middle of the pitch saying, ‘What’s going on here?!’

“We were 3-0 down after 37 minutes and had 18 per cent possession in the game.”

He also compared De Bruyne to Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard.

“De Bruyne reminds me a bit of Steven Gerrard,” Rooney said.

“He drifts out to that right-hand side and plays some brilliant balls whipped in, like Stevie used to.”

Rooney also believes that Manchester City may never have a better chance of winning this season’s Champions League.

Pep Guardiola’s side will meet Real Madrid at the Etihad on Friday in the last-16 tie, having beaten the Spanish giants 2-1 in the first leg in March.

Rooney, who won the competition with Manchester United in 2008, wrote in his Sunday Times column : “Sergio Ramos is suspended which is a huge loss to the Real defence and I think City will score.

“Whether they are solid enough at the back themselves is my only question.

“Real will target their centre halves and it's a worry that this season every other (Premier League) 'Big Six' club beat City... This shows Guardiola's team can struggle to keep the best sides out.”

Kahn: Bayern’s Champions League chances will be harmed by City appeal

It will be tougher for Bayern Munich to win the Champions League after Manchester City were victorious in their appeal to overturn their UEFA European ban, according to Oliver Kahn.

The Bayern director – and former goalkeeper – called for tougher financial fair play (FFP) rules to “get more balanced competition”.

Agreeing that City’s verdict at the Court of Arbitration for Sport is a setback for Bayern’s European chances, Kahn, who will succeed Karl Heinz Rumenigge as Bayern chief executive in 2022, added: “If we look at the financial fair play issue it would be.

“We are very interested that this financial fair play should be taken more seriously.

“I don't know the situation exactly now in Man City or Paris Saint-Germain or other clubs, but I think we should take this financial fair play in the future more seriously, because if we don't do that, we don't need it.

“I think there is a lot of work to do and as you see from the competition in Europe, we need a clear structure and serious financial fair play so that we get more balanced competition.”
