The FA Cup final could be played as late as October this year after the Football Association confirmed they are determined not to abandon the competition, which keeps Manchester United and Manchester City's chances of winning the competition alive.

The competition is currently at the quarter-final stage, with City due to travel to Newcastle, Norwich hosting United, Leicester to face Chelsea and Arsenal heading to Sheffield United.

The FA confirmed earlier this month that all cup matches were postponed until further notice due to the coronavirus outbreak.

But according to a report in the Mirror, the FA are exploring ways of getting the FA Cup ties played with behind-closed-doors an option, but no date has yet been set on when they might take place.

And although the governing body confirmed on Thursday afternoon that all football below the three National League divisions will be declared null and void, they are determined to play the remaining cup fixtures.

The report also states that the Premier League is due to meet again next Thursday when further discussions will be held, with bosses looking at options which include urging clubs to have a break now, do a “mini pre-season” and then resume games behind closed doors on June 1 if the virus is under control.

“Clubs involved are close to reaching a major Final and for those clubs and supporters we will do all we can to keep the Wembley dream alive,” an FA statement read.
