Man City Champions League ban raises prospect of Premier League sanctions

Manchester City could face Premier League sanctions if UEFA's decision to ban the Blues from the Champions League is upheld.

Pep Guardiola's side are not allowed to take part in the Champions League for the next two seasons after the UEFA adjudicatory chamber ruled that the Financial Fair Play regulations have been seriously breached - although the club are taking the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and remain confident that an independent hearing will exonerate them.

The Premier League have been investigating the Blues since March 2019 over financial regulations, academy player recruitment and third-party ownership and their case remains ongoing with no timeframe as to when it is expected to be completed.

But if UEFA's decision is judged as the correct one, that will place more scrutiny on the league's investigation into City; reports have suggested the Blues could even be given a points deduction.

Ultimately, the Premier League - as well as continuing its own independent investigation - will be waiting to see what happens next in the ongoing battle between City and UEFA as the two prepare to meet again in court.

But such strong action from UEFA asks more questions of how the Premier League will react to such a strong punishment for its champions for the last two years.
