Jurgen Klopp has admitted that his Liverpool team’s Premier League title defeat by Manchester City left him feeling “bitter”.

This season, Liverpool have opened an early two-point lead by winning their four games to date, while City slipped up in a 2-2 home draw with Tottenham.

But Klopp, whilst visiting the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, admitted that being edged out by City by a point, after losing just one game all season, had left a scar.

“But it's clear that there is a lot more possible with my team, and yes, the title in the Premier League would be a great endorsement for many years of hard work.” Liverpool opened up a seven-point gap halfway through the season, but City carved that back by inflicting that sole defeat, a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium in January.

The German manager bounced back from that disappointment by winning the Champions League , beating Tottenham in the final.

“Titles are and were never my motivation, I want to win every game and make my players better day by day, and then we'll see where that leads,” he told the Deutschen Presse-Agentur “We were very close last year.

You only lose one match in the whole season and it's not enough in the end - that was very bitter.
