Gianfranco Zola has finally opened up on Kepa Arrizabalaga's controversial refusal to be substituted in last season's Carabao Cup final.

The Chelsea goalkeeper flatly rejected Maurizio Sarri's orders at Wembley by refusing to come off during extra-time before their penalty shootout defeat by Manchester City.He would not adhere to his manager's wishes and stayed on the pitch despite Chelsea wanting to replace him with Willy Caballero ahead of the impending shootout.

The Spain international appeared to pick up an injury before the debacle took place but he was soon ready to continue playing on.

Six months on, former Chelsea assistant Zola has revealed what went on at Wembley during the final.

We knew we had Willy Caballero on the bench, who knew all of the Manchester City players and so it was an opportunity for us.

'It wasn't pre-arranged but we saw the day before he was injured, so we thought it was the injury coming back and we saw an opportunity because Caballero knows the Manchester City players so he can also be a good thing; simple as that.

We could not believe it, we were speechless, we kept telling him to come off but he didn't come'.
