Reports emerged last night from a ‘tier 1’ (very reliable) Dutch source De Telegraaf that Manchester City target Frenkie de Jong had chosen to join Paris Saint-Germain, thus snubbing the likes of City and Barcelona.

It looked like City had lost out on another primary target and would have to look at alternatives, but a story from France tonight has cast doubt over the De Jong to PSG stories.

According to Paris-based Le Parisien, known for its ties to PSG, Ajax’s €75 million asking price for De Jong is ‘prohibitive’ at the feeling at the Ligue 1 club is that this story was planted to create an auction between other contenders – namely Manchester City, Manchester United and Barcelona – for the 21-year-old midfielder.

PSG do not intend to pay €75 million for De Jong, and although they do hold an interest in the Dutchman, Le Parisien is adamant that there is no deal whatsoever.

The club’s other midfielder target, Tanguy Ndombele of Lyon, may also prove too expensive for PSG due to Financial Fair Play concerns, with City and Juventus also monitoring the player.
