There was relief from the journalists huddling on a dank Manchester afternoon when Phil Foden came out on to the training pitch as it appeared the rest of the squad would follow.

His 90 minutes at Crystal Palace on Sunday was the first full competitive game he has played for over five months, so there is understandably caution.

They did not for around ten minutes though, as instead the Manchester City youngster kept himself busy on the ball, dribbling across the pitch or taking part in his own crossbar challenge against some of the backroom staff.

There were eight English players on the pitch for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final and Foden will be hoping he has done enough to earn a place in the 18-man squad for the second leg.

Fernandinho and Fabian Delph, who missed the win over Crystal Palace at the weekend with minor injuries, were both present and the sight of Fernandinho especially will be comforting for Blues as they look to overturn their deficit.

However, he looked fit as he trained again and could yet play an important part in City's end to the season.

Guardiola hardly has a bad touch but it is his assistant Mikel Arteta that likes to get stuck in in training and show that he can still cut it in a very talented squad.
