England took another step towards qualification for Euro 2020 with a entertaining 5-3 win over Kosovo at St. Mary's.

Gareth Southgate's side maintain their 100 per cent record after four qualifying matches but they were tested by the visitors, who opened the scoring inside 40 seconds and twice netted in the second-half after England had responded with five goals in a brilliant, Raheem Sterling-inspired blitz.

Against a Kosovo side unbeaten in 14 games before tonight, Sterling, Sancho and Harry Kane looked as good any front three in the world and Rashford, who replaced Sancho late on, suddenly seems the man fighting for a place.

The approach is a cornerstone of Southgate's system but his centre-halves have too often looked unconvincing in possession, notably in the Nations League semi-final, when Harry Maguire was exposed.

It took less Kosovo less than 40 seconds to exploit one of England's biggest weaknesses: their fallibility playing out from the back.

Jadon Sancho was one of three chances to the XI from Bulgaria, with the England manager challenging him to "cope under pressure" at St. Mary's.

Their commitment to attacking was rewarded after in the second half, as they recovered to within two goals of England to set up the odd nervy moment towards the end.
