Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has aimed a dig at Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte by suggesting that they were too defensive to get the best out of Eden Hazard.

Kompany’s Belgian international teammate has enjoyed a sensational start to the season under Maurizio Sarri, scoring seven goals and providing six assists in 14 Premier League games.

A succession of small injuries have halted Hazard’s progress in recent weeks following a blistering start to the campaign yet he remains well on course to enjoy one of the most productive seasons of his career.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding Hazard’s future with Chelsea’s No.10 making no secret of his admiration for Real Madrid, yet Kompany believes he has the perfect manager to maximise his potential at Chelsea.

‘I think he was due an offensive manager. I can’t remember him having that a lot in his career,’ Kompany said.

‘Eventually a manager like this is what he needed, no matter where he was, to get the best out of him. The future is bright for him.’

Hazard, who joined Chelsea for £32m from Lille in 2012, is under contract until 2020 but the club are understandably keen to tie him down to a longer deal.

According to reports, they are willing to offer the 27-year-old in excess of £300,000 per week in order to keep him in west London and out of the clutches of their European rivals.

One factor that could tempt Hazard to remain at Chelsea is the presence of Sarri who has managed to get the best out of him since arriving from Napoli in the summer.

The Italian has made radical changes to the Chelsea team this season, ditching the back three system used under Conte and installing Jorginho as his defensive midfielder ahead of N’Golo Kante.

Pep Guardiola has made no secret of his admiration for Sarri in the past and Kompany also praised the former Napoli boss ahead of this weekend’s clash at Stamford Bridge.

‘Chelsea is one of the most exciting teams in the Premier League this year.,’ Kompany said.

‘Look at the way they try and build up, the way they try and play through the middle, the talent they have upfront to create chances – you can only say that they are the real deal.’
