Chelsea and Met Police to investigate claims of racist abuse against Raheem Sterling

An investigation has been launched over claims a Chelsea fan racially abused Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling during Saturday’s Premier League game.

The incident happened in the first half at Stamford Bridge as Sterling went to retrieve the ball.

Cameras picked up several home supporters screaming insults at the Manchester City forward during the first half of the game but it is unclear what was exactly said.

Several people have since shared the video on Twitter, including Ian Wright and Rio Ferdinand.

Sterling is yet to make a complaint but Chelsea said they are aware of the incident and have promised to take a zero tolerance approach.

A Chelsea spokesman confirmed: ‘We are aware of video footage and reports. We will investigate the matter and take the strongest possible action where necessary.’

The Metropolitan Police said it is ‘aware of a video circulating online in which it is claimed racial abuse was allegedly directed at a player.’

In a statement, the force says ‘we will review the footage to determine whether any offences have been committed.’
