David Luiz speaks: “I think it was a great game,” he tells BT Sport. “You have to be honest. We were playing against the best team in Europe or the world at the moment. We were set to suffer and when you have to suffer you have a lot of humility and then we tried to take our chance to score. Humility was the key today and I think all the team did great.”

N’Golo Kante speaks: “It was a great game and we had some difficult moments,” he says. “We had to suffer. The most important is to give my best on the pitch. I am happy to do my best on the pitch and happy to get my second goal of the season.”

Full time: Chelsea 2-0 Manchester City

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeep! One Step Beyond by Madness blares out over the tannoy as the players go through their post-match niceties. It was a game of two halves - Chelsea were dominated throughout the first, but went in at the interval with an unlikely lead. They took the game to City in the second half, dominated and scored a second to put the game beyond the reigning champions.

2.22pm EST 14:22

90+4 min: Chelsea fans are loving this. Ole-ing away as their players ping the ball around the pitch. Kepa misplaces a pass and the ball falls for Gabriel Jesus. His shot is saved by the goalkeeper, who atones for his error. Moments later, Kyle Walker shoots high over the bar.

2.20pm EST 14:20

90+3 min: Chelsea will finish the match in third, by the way, with Spurs still to play against Leicester.

2.20pm EST 14:20

90+2 min: We’re halfway through the extras and Chelsea can hardly blow it from here. Liverpool will end the day as league leaders by a point from Manchester City.

2.18pm EST 14:18

90+1 min: Chelsea substitution: Eden Hazard off, Olivier Giroud on.

2.18pm EST 14:18

89 min: Bernardo sends the ball in. David Luiz can only half clear and after having a couple of shots blocked, Manchester City fire wide from distance courtesy of Fernandinho.

2.16pm EST 14:16

88 min: Down on the touchline, Pep Guardiola is still moaning at the fourth official. Beside him, his opposite number Maurizio Sarri is almost certainly gasping for a cigarette at this stage. City win a corner.

2.15pm EST 14:15

87 min: Sterling sends a cross into the mixer with venomous pace. Running on to it, Gabriel Jesus tries to steer the ball goalwards, but fails to hit the target.

2.13pm EST 14:13

85 min: Maybe Pep wasn’t wrong after all - having seen the replay again, I’m not convinced Chelsea should have got the corner from which they scored. For all that, it was only a corner and if Ilkay Gundogan hadn’t lost his man or City had a couple of men on the posts, Chelsea wouldn’t have scored.

2.12pm EST 14:12

84 min: City plough on in search of a goal, but Rudiger boots the ball clear unceremoniously. Man City substitution: Phil Foden on for Riyad Mahrez.

2.11pm EST 14:11

82 min: Nobody does calamitous performances quite like David Luiz, a terrific player who has fully redeemed himself after his absolute horror show against Tottenham. He helped create the first goal and has scored the second at Stamford Bridge tonight.

2.09pm EST 14:09

79 min: That was Chelsea’s first corner of the game and they’ve scored from it. Pep Guardiola is furious on the touchline and spent the immediate aftermath of the goal remonstrating with the fourth official, Andre Marriner. He seems to think Chelsea shouldn’t have had a corner. Replays show he was wrong.

It was a fine header from Luiz, who had to twist his body in mid-air and really attack the ball with his big hairy head.

2.06pm EST 14:06

GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Man City (Luiz 78)

Chelsea double their lead: They win a corner and David Luiz scores with a fine near post header that Ederson didn’t get near.

Updated at 2.24pm EST

2.05pm EST 14:05

77 min: The clock ticks on as Manchester City continue their search for a winner. They’ve had plenty of possession, but have created very little. Chelsea substitution: Ruben Loftus-Cheek on for Willian.

2.03pm EST 14:03

75 min: Kante dodges a bullet as he’s robbed of possession in midfield after being blindsided by a galloping Raheem Sterling in midfield. It looked like the Man City forward had a clear path towards goal, but Kante somehow scrambled to get a foot in and win the ball back.

2.02pm EST 14:02

73 min: Azpilicueta has been outstanding tonight and now takes the ball past Delph and releases Hazard up the right flank. Laporte takes the Chelsea man down and concedes a free-kick in line with the front of the City penalty area. It’s squandered on the back of a poor delivery.

2.00pm EST 14:00

72 min: Azpilicueta to the rescue again, conceding another corner as Raheem Sterling threatened. Nothing comes of it.

1.58pm EST 13:58

70 min: Alonso escapes down the left flank and picks out Hazard. His cross is wayward.

1.58pm EST 13:58

69 min: City win a corner as rain falls at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea clear, with Azpilicueta unceremoniously hoofing the ball down the pitch.

1.56pm EST 13:56

68 min: Yep, Silva limps off and is replaced by Ilkay Gundogan. It’s all going pear-shaped for City, for whom the injuries are mounting up. Having said that, they’re not exactly low on quality back-up.

1.55pm EST 13:55

67 min: Corrections and clarifications dept: Bernardo Silva, who was already on the pitch did not replace Leroy Sane in the 53rd minute, it was Gabriel Jesus. Apologies. Pep could be forced to make another change very shortly, as David Silva is struggling with what looks like a hamstring injury.

1.53pm EST 13:53

65 min: Kovacic limps off and is replaced by Ross Barkley.

1.52pm EST 13:52

63 min: Jorginho is booked for his part in a melee prompted by City’s failure to put the ball out of play so Mateo Kovacic could receive treatment for an injury. There’s no reason why they should have put the ball out of play - it’s up to the ref to stop play.

1.50pm EST 13:50

62 min: Pedro shoots low, hard and straight at Ederson.

1.50pm EST 13:50

60 min: Sterling, who is getting dog’s abuse from the crowd, curls a cross through the Chelsea penalty area from the left touchline. Kepa ushers it out of play.

1.47pm EST 13:47

58 min: Hazard gets on the ball in midfield and pings the ball wide to Pedro on the right touchline. A promising move breaks down when Azpilicueta makes a dog’s breakfast of his cross into the City penalty area.

1.45pm EST 13:45

56 min: Hazard is penalised for handball under pressure from Stones, giving City a free-kick from about 30 yards out, left of centre. Kyle Walker curls the ball goalwards with his right foot and his effort is on target, but Kepa saves with a minimum of fuss.

1.43pm EST 13:43

55 min: Raheem Sterling tries to jink his way in from the left and wins a corner when Azpilicueta gets in his way. Sterling takes the corner, but fails to clear the first man. Chelsea clear.

1.42pm EST 13:42

54 min: Man City corner. David Silva whips the ball into the centre, where David Luiz clears before John Stones can get to the ball.

1.41pm EST 13:41

53 min: Pep rings the changes for City. Well, one change. Leroy Sane makes way for Gabriel Jesus and doesn’t look too happy about it. The substitute takes up position of the centre of City’s front three, Sterling moves to the left and Mahrez to the right.

Updated at 1.53pm EST

1.40pm EST 13:40

52 min: Kante picks out Willian, unmarked in a good position after City’s defence had been stretched by a good run from Hazard. Wil;lian shoots first time but doesn’t get any power on his shot. Ederson saves comfortably but City are in trouble here.

1.39pm EST 13:39

51 min: Chelsea apply more pressure, with Azpilicueta playing a ball in over the top. John Stones is forced to block Pedro’s shot. Man City are wobbling under a lot of pressure here.

1.38pm EST 13:38

50 min: Riyad Mahrez is penalised for a foul on David Luiz and throws his arms in the air in frustration. Chelsea are looking very comfortable in these early stages of the second half.

1.37pm EST 13:37

49 min: Close! But no cigar for Willian. He steps up and shoots, but Ederson is able to save. Pedro skies the follow-up from an offside position and City clear their lines.

1.36pm EST 13:36

48 min: Fernandinho brings down Willian to give Chelsea a free-kick about 25 yards from the City goal, straight in front of the target.

1.35pm EST 13:35

47 min: Chelsea ping the ball hither and yon inside their own half, enjoy an uncharacteristically long spell of possession. Another 42 minutes of that and they’ll be home and hosed.

1.34pm EST 13:34

Second half: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester City

46 min: Chelsea get the ball rolling for the second half, with a one-goal lead to protect. Pep emerged from the tunnel, sat in his dug-out seat, closed his eyes and took a long contemplative draught from his water-bottle as he wondered what it’s all about. For Chelsea, Ross Barkley has been sent out to warm up on the touchline. No changes in personnel on either side after the break.

1.31pm EST 13:31

So, Man City trail: For all their tiki-taka fancy dannery, there’s a certain amusing irony to the fact that they were ostensibly undone by a dirty long ball over the top. Interestingly, on BT Sport, Steve McManaman had recommended that Chelsea try exactly that just moments before David Luiz opted to launch a long diagonal ball up the channel in the direction of Pedro.

1.20pm EST 13:20

Half-time: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester City

Peep! The players file off for their half-time brew and Pep Guardiola’s speech should make for interesting listening. His players have dominated without creating too many chances, only to be caught by a sucker punch delivered by N’Golo Kante just before the break. It’ll make for a fascinating second 45 minutes, that’s for sure. Don’t touch that dial.

1.18pm EST 13:18

45+1 min: Well, well, well. N’Golo smashes home the ball from about 12 yards out after getting on the end of a square ball from Eden Hazard. Chelsea’s attack began with a complete change of tack that caught City by surprise. David Luiz launched a long diagonal towards Pedro in the City left-back area of the field. He played the ball to Willian, who was forced wide and gave the ball to Hazard. With a shimmy, he found a yard and teed up Kante. The finish was emphatic.

1.15pm EST 13:15

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Man City (Kante 45)

Chelsea lead! Totally against the run of play, Chelsea take the lead courtesy of an n’goal from N’Golo Kante.

Updated at 1.37pm EST

1.13pm EST 13:13

43 min: Now Alonso loses the ball in the Chelsea left-back position, with Mahrez and Sterling snapping around his heels like a pair of angry terriers. Throw-in for City.

1.13pm EST 13:13

42 min: David Luiz gifts possession to Manchester City with a loose, casual clearance, but gets away with it when Chelsea win the ball back.

1.11pm EST 13:11

40 min: Man City continue to dominate, but haven’t yet scored. They were really turning the screw, but that break for the injury to David Luiz seems to have halted their momentum.

1.10pm EST 13:10

38 min: The ball goes out of play for a City corner and Raheem Sterling goers to retrieve it. Behind the advertising hoarding, several snarling Chelsea fans - grown, middle-aged men - scream abuse at him, their faces contorted with fury.

“They’re wishing him a happy birthday,” quips Steve McManaman, on co-comms for BT Sport. Sterling is 24 years old today and already appears to have achieved considerably more in life than his comparatively elderly chums in the stands.

1.07pm EST 13:07

37 min: David Luiz gets to his feet, looking very uncomfortable and holding his lower back. On the sideline, Andreas Christensen eventually deigns to leave the bench and begin his warm-up.

1.06pm EST 13:06

35 min: Azpilicueta it was, who took one for the team, flinging himself in front of Sane’s shot when a goal looked on the cards. There’s a break in play as David Luiz receives treatment from the Chelsea medics.

Updated at 1.20pm EST

1.04pm EST 13:04

33 min: Chance! Sane has a shot blocked after Sterling had picked him out with a pull-back. Sterling performed a little twirl on the byline to take the ball past Alonso and leave the Spaniard trailing in his wake and looking a little foolish.

1.03pm EST 13:03

32 min: In the Chelsea penalty area adjacent to one the uprights with the ball at his feet, Sane is unable to get a shot away before he’s crowded off the ball.

1.01pm EST 13:01

29 min: Pressing Chelsea’s defenders, Manchester City force Kepa to boot the ball long to increase their chances of winning it back at the first time of asking. He does exactly that, aiming for Hazard, who does well to win it considering his lack of inches compared to those in shirts of a lighter blue surrounding him. Chelsea are really struggling to get any momentum going here, as they’re unable to pass more than three or four passes together without losing the ball.

12.58pm EST 12:58

28 min: Nothing comes of the corner and before too long, the balls travelled the length of the pitch and is back at the feet of Ederson.

12.57pm EST 12:57

27 min: Mahrez plays a cross-field pass to Sane on the left flank. He forces a corner out of Azpilicueta, who stays on his feet and robs the German of possession.
