The football world was left stunned on Friday night as UEFA announced Manchester City are to be banned from the Champions League for two years.

The unprecedented punishment has been handed down for what European football's governing body say are "serious breaches" of financial fair play (FFP) rules.

It means if City's impending appealĀ  is unsuccessful they will not be playing European football for the next two seasons.

Champions League football is of course hugely lucrative financially.

The Premier League title race is already over but City remain in three other competitions and are still hopeful of a landmark season.

However you have to wonder how the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling to name just two will feel about the prospect of two years of no Champions League football.

However it could become increasingly difficult to keep that squad together if they are not playing Champions League football.
