Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester City’s recruitment strategy will be the key to them catching up with Liverpool in the seasons to come.

City have failed to retain their Premier League title this season, falling well short of Liverpool’s points tally. The title was confirmed for Liverpool when City failed to beat Chelsea last Thursday.

The new champions face the team they have inherited the title from in their next match on Thursday. And former Reds defender Carragher is expecting a close game.

City have work to do to close the gap to Liverpool. But Carragher thinks that even though Pep Guardiola will be naturally busier in the transfer window, Liverpool’s mentality will not be up for question.

“To be honest, I think a lot of it will be through who City recruit,” he said when asked how the gap may change next season. “I think there’s no doubt that City will do a lot more in the market than Liverpool will. I’m not quite sure who Liverpool will bring in, if any.

“Liverpool made that same decision on the back of winning the Champions League last year.

“You’re always a little bit worried when a team wins something, you hear the old cliche, you’ve always got to strengthen when you’re at your best or when you’ve been successful.

“But that was probably proven incorrect this season in how well Liverpool have done in the league.

“And obviously with Covid-19, how that’s affected teams financially, it looks like Liverpool pulled out of the Timo Werner deal as well, maybe. Maybe other deals now they look at and think they’re not sure.”

Carragher added: “We shouldn’t forget Liverpool have got some really good youngsters as well coming through, saw that in cup games this season, how well they’ve done as well.

“So, I think if City recruit well, I think that bridges the gap from what we’ve seen this season. It’s how Liverpool deal with that because I think the centre-backs issue at Manchester City was a problem for them all season.

“Man City are better than Liverpool with the ball. Probably your own eye tells you that, but also when you look at the stats in terms of goals scored.

“The big problem is how many goals conceded Man City have compared to Liverpool, that’s the big difference between the teams and City need to rectify that.

“With losing Kompany and also Laporte has been out for a long period. So you expect Laporte to be back, and whether they add in that position, I think that certainly could bridge the gap and make it really tight next season.”
